According to CNN, two Metro trains collided during rush hour Monday killing four and injuring dozens. Mayor Adrian Fenty said “It is the deadliest crash in the history of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. One of the dead is the female operator of one of the trains. The crash happened before 5:00 p.m. on the Red Line in the District of Columbia near the border with Takoma Park, Maryland.

Seventy people were treated at the scene. According to Chief Dennis Rubin of
Washington’s Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, 56 people were treated with minor injuries, 12 with moderate injuries and two with life-threatening injuries.

One of the trains was stationary when the other trained crashed into the back of Fire department personnel had to cut through the train wreckage to get to the injured.

The
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the crash. At least two FBI officials were on the scene as part of the National Capital Response Squad. Amy Kudwa of the Department of Homeland Security said “at this early stage, there is no indication of anything other than an accidental collision.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased and injured.
