Five Ways You Can Prevent Drunk Driving In the Virginias And Carolinas

It's very simple: drunk driving kills. Yet the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 36 people die each day and over 700 are injured in drunk driving cases across the country. Even more shockingly, USA Today reports that one out of ten Americans admits to driving drunk in the past.

What are some ways you can curb drunk driving and save lives?

· Keep an eye on your guests when you host a party. Make sure that your drinking guests are given the options of staying in the spare bedroom or on a couch, or that a sober friend can drop them at home. Also, understand that in some cases, you could be liable if someone leaves your house intoxicated and harms themselves or others.

· Support a local chapter of MADD. Mothers Against Drunk Driving have chapters all over the country and are very involved in educating teens about the many dangers of drinking and driving. Join a group, donate your time or funds, and make sure that the youth in your town know the facts.

· Watch your own habits. Drinking itself takes away your ability to make good decisions, and even the most responsible among us may drink drunk if we make the decision to do so while drunk. Make sure you have a plan to get home if you will be drinking, or limit yourself to a certain number of drinks per night.

· Write your local politician about the drunk driving issues and bills that concern you most. Sign petitions to make DUI tougher, and generally keep knowledgeable about the new laws and proposed laws in your state.

· Report suspicious driving to your local police department. If you see a car swerving, making dangerous maneuvers, or generally driving recklessly, call the police. Even if the person driving is not drunk or on drugs, they probably need some sort of assistance. It could save lives.
