Bike Rider Left in Coma After Truck Wreck | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Michael Sprick of Bad Laer, Germany was on a cycling tour of the United States when he was hit by a truck while riding along a road in Pulaski County, Virginia (VA). Sadly, Mr. Spring suffered a serious injury as a result of the accident and his life may be changed forever. Mr. Sprick has been in a coma since the wreck.

Mr. Sprick’s relatives planned to fly him to Germany on a special plane this month for further treatment. This illustrates that when an accident occurs and a victim is seriously injured, it doesn’t just affect them, it affects their friends and family. Imagine the trauma Mr. Sprick’s family went through when they received a call out of the blue that Mr. Sprick was hit by a truck and is now in a coma. Not only was Mr. Sprick’s life turned upside down, but all of his family members’ had their lives adversely affected as well.

The truck driver that hit Mr. Sprick has been convicted of reckless driving. He received a suspended 90-day jail sentence and a fine of $500 for his careless behavior. The at-fault truck driver was also convicted of driving on a suspended license and fined $100, according to wset.com.

Mr. Sprick’s family should consult with an injury lawyer in Virginia to discuss their legal options. The at-fault driver has been sentenced with criminal charges, but that does not preclude civil damages through a personal injury claim. Also, it does not matter that Mr. Sprick was a German citizen since jurisdiction is traditionally based on the place of the injury.
