Boat Accident in Newport News, VA Leads to Tragic Loss of Teenager | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A father and son were out on the water enjoying a boat ride near the James River Bridge in Newport News, Virginia (VA) when tragedy struck. Reports indicate that as the father turned at a corner, his bass fishing boat collided with a Sea Tow vessel. The son was killed and the father suffered serious injuries, according to WAVY.com.  The son was only 13 years old.

Police are still investigating the accident so we still don’t have all the details as to what actually happened.

My deepest sympathies go out to the father. Losing a child is one of the most devastating events a parent can endure. The pain is virtually indescribable. As a father, I can honestly say I don’t know what I’d do if one of my children died in a sudden accident.

Serious boating accidents are not uncommon in VA. There were 146 boat accidents in VA in 2007 which led to 106 injuries and 13 lives lost, according to the VA Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. This recent accident highlights just how serious a boating accident can be.
