Charlottesville Man Charged After His Pickup Truck Collides with Moped | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

What Happened

When a young driver failed to stop at a stop sign he collided with a moped carrying two people on March 1, 2013 in Charlottesville, Virginia (VA).

The accident took place at the intersection of Boling Avenue and Meridian Street. The pickup truck was headed northbound on Meridian Street when he failed to stop at the stop sign. When he crossed into the intersection the moped crashed into the side of his truck. The driver of the moped escaped without injury but the passenger was not so lucky. The 29-year-old female was taken to UVA Medical Center with personal injuries.

The Virginia Personal Injury Lawyers’ Perspective

It’s uncertain why the young driver failed to stop at the stop sign but local police allege his negligence caused the woman to be injured. In incidents of this nature the cause can typically be due to distracted driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2010 over 3,000 people were killed in distracted driving crashes. Distracted driving is very common among younger drivers due to their lack of experience on the road. It is very easy for them become distracted by passengers and more commonly cell phones. The use of cell phones behind the wheel has become such a problem that Virginia (VA) has passed new legislation to allow police to pull over drivers who are texting while driving. Distracted driving accidents can be very deadly because with their eyes off the road a driver will not see the accident coming and fail to react to try and avoid the collision.

It is very fortunate that neither of the victims on the moped were killed. Due to the size of a moped and the weight of cars and trucks when accidents take place the riders are fully exposed to the impact as well as possibly being thrown from the moped. Just a few days ago in Lynchburg, Virginia (VA) a moped driver died from the injuries he sustained after a collision with an SUV.

Moped accidents are very dangerous often leaving victim riders severely injured or worse dead. If you or a loved one has been hurt or killed while riding a moped we urge you to speak with our experienced Virginia (VA) personal injury or wrongful death attorneys.
