A woman was out on her deck enjoying the day with her 4-year-old daughter. Suddenly, her deck collapsed and fell two stories to the ground. The mother suffered a fractured ankle and numerous cuts all over her body. Fortunately, her daughter escaped the incident with no serious injuries, according to nwherald.com.
The mother knew this deck collapse was not some random accident. There had to have been some type of defect or problem that led to this awful incident. Turns out she was right. The deck was attached by nails to her house which violated a code that requires decks to be attached by lag bolts.
The mother obtained the services of a lawyer and received a $1 million settlement from Town and Country Homes. This settlement didn't just help the injured mother. It spurred an inspection of all decks in the neighborhood and it turns out a deck was starting to separate from a home nearby.
If you own or rent a home with a deck, take the time to get it inspected. Deck collapses can lead to serious injuries like broken bones, spinal cord damage, lost limbs, or a traumatic brain injury.
