Driver Injured After Falling Asleep Behind the Wheel in Campbell County, VA | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Far too many drivers are on the road right now feeling exhausted, maybe just pulled an “all nighter” and are having trouble concentrating. Their eyes get heavy and all they want to do is sleep, but they push themselves to get to their destination. This is what leads drowsy driving car wrecks.

A recent car crash in Campbell County, Virginia (VA) featured a driver falling into this same trap. He was a 22-year-old Lynchburg, VA resident driving down Leesville Road near Greenview Driver early in the morning when he fell asleep behind the wheel. His car veered off the side of the road and slammed into a tree, according to WSET13 News.

Fortunately, the driver was the only person in the car. He suffered injuries and currently being treated at the hospital. However, his troubles are just beginning since falling asleep behind the wheel is reckless driving. If convicted, he could face up to one year in jail, up to $2,500 in fines, and suspended driving privileges for up to six months.

Our firm has written about the dangers of drowsy driving and how your risk of suffering serious injury increases exponentially if you are tired/exhausted and decide to drive long distances. If you are feeling sleepy, take a quick 30 minute nap or stop at a gas station and grab a cup of coffee. The worst thing you can do is continue to push yourself and wind up getting into a bad car accident because you dosed off.
