DUI Charges Follow for Newport News, VA Police Detective Accused of Causing Rear-End Collision | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A man identified as a detective with the Newport News, Virginia (VA), is facing drunk driving charges following a rear-end collision in James City County shortly after midnight on Nov. 10, 2012.

According to the Virginian-Pilot, the detective failed to slow down when an SUV braked in front of his Jeep on Longhill Road near the interchange with Route 199/Hummelsine Parkway. The crash sent the driver of the SUV to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Additional details on the accident provided by authorities to WAVY-TV 10 indicate the driver being blamed for causing the crash refused an alcohol blood test, which itself can be a criminal offense, and has been charged with following too closely.

The Virginia Personal Injury Lawyers’ Perspective

The majority of rear-end collisions need never occur. When drivers keep their eyes on the road and their heads in the game, they can almost always slow down enough and stop in time to avoid running into the back of the vehicle in front them. Speeding, becoming distracted and, yes, being impaired by drugs or alcohol greatly increase the likelihood for rear-enders because each act of negligence or recklessness limits drivers’ abilities to quickly recognize and respond to changes in traffic flows.

It appears the injuries sustained by the victim of the accident near Williamsburg on Nov. 10 were relatively minor. That is good news as far it goes. Better news would be that no crash occurred at all, which most likely would have been the case had another driver apparently not been drinking and driving.
