DUI Suspect Crashes into Virginia Beach Police Vehicle | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Even police officers can be injured by a drunk driver.  If a drunk driver is not even cognizant enough to avoid a police officer, what chance do you stand.  According to police, the at-fault driver was driving down Independence Boulevard in VA Beach and made a left onto Euclid Road when he struck a vehicle; the driver then overcorrected his car, crossed the dividing median of the road and slammed into a police car containing an officer and a police chaplain. The drunk driver continued to drive until his vehicle flipped onto its side; he was subsequently arrested and was charged with multiple offenses, including driving under the influence (DUI) and following too close; at the time of this posting he is being held without bond.

There is no excuse for drunk driving; it is an incredibly irresponsible behavior that puts everyone on the road in danger. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), a staggering one in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime; in 2011, the organization also reports, there was one drunk-driving-related fatality in the United States every 53 minutes. If motorists who have been drinking would simply give up the keys to a sober friend or call a cab, so many of these terrible accidents could be avoided.
