According to WCNC, the fatal situation began when a man who has had numerous run-ins with the law drove around a police checkpoint, almost striking two police officers. Police pursued him on I-85 to the Park Street exit in Belmont. The SUV driver ran a red light at Wilkinson Boulevard and hit a car being driven by the former mayor.
A passenger in the SUV that caused the accident and two people in a PT Cruiser that was also hit were taken to an area hospital with injuries.
The suspect continued to run on foot, but was caught by police and arrested. He is likely to face multiple charges, including those related to the tragic deaths of two people.
