Leaf Blower Recall Announced | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Autumn is just around the corner, and along with beautiful foliage comes falling leaves and yard cleanups. Years ago, that meant a lot of back-breaking raking, but life got a little easier with the development of leaf blowers. However, a recent recall announcement is alerting consumers to a very real danger that could be sitting in their garage or shed.

Black and Decker has announced it is recalling almost 600,000 of their 3-in-1 electric blower/vacuum/mulchers. The defective product was sold mainly at Lowe’s, and also online through Amazon, between May 2013 through this month.

According to the recall announcement, there is a chance of the fan cover unexpectedly coming off the tool as it is being used, leaving the person using it at risk of lacerations and cuts from the fan blades. The company has received at least four complaints from victims who experienced this issue and ended up with finger lacerations. The manufacturer has warned consumers to stop using the product immediately and to contact them for a repair kit which should take care of the defective. The model numbers included in the recall are BV5600, BV6000 and BV6600. You can find the model number printed on the name plate of the blower, which is located on the right-hand side of the motor housing. Only “Type 1” models are being recalled. That number can also be found on the plate.

As consumers, we expect the products we purchase to have passed many safety tests so we don’t have to worry about potential dangers. All too often, news comes out about injuries sustained from a defective product – whether due to a design flaw, mislabeling, or other issue. Unfortunately, many of these defects are discovered because there have been multiple victims who have been injured.

When these injuries occur, the victim may be able to initiate legal action against parties who could be connected to that defect, including the manufacturer and/or the company that sold the product.
