Major Accident on I-77 Near Base of Fancy Gap Mountain Results in 3 Deaths, 25 Injuries | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

What Happened

Mayhem broke out on Interstate 77 (I-77) near the base of Fancy Gap Mountain at the Virginia-North Carolina border. Close to 100 vehicles were involved in accidents. Sadly, 25 people suffered injuries and 3 people lost their lives.

Reports indicate that there were 17 separate wrecks involving 95 vehicles within a one mile span. The dense fog probably played a role in the shockingly high number of accidents.

The “epicenter” of this terrible chain of accidents was a crash involving about eight vehicles, some of which caught fire, according to wvnstv.com.

The Virginia Injury Lawyers’ Perspective

This is a terrible event and our hearts go out to the victims. Chain reaction accidents can be extremely complicated, especially when dealing with insurance companies. Issues are likely to arise over which vehicles are liable and it wouldn’t be surprising if some of the drivers had very little, or no insurance coverage.

If one of the injured drivers, or a family member of a victim who lost their life, wants to seek restitution through a personal injury claim, they should consult with a Virginia personal injury lawyer who is also licensed in North Carolina. Why? Because this accident occurred at the border of Virginia and North Carolina so it’s possible that individuals from both states are involved, which could play a factor in the litigation process.
