Man Hit and Killed by Car in Portsmouth, VA | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Nathaniel Bethea was walking home from work at the Salvation Army when he was hit by a car on Victory Boulevard in Portsmouth, Virginia (VA). He was only 54 years old.

To make matters worse, the at-fault driver decided to flee the scene of the accident instead of providing assistance to Mr. Bethea, according to wavy.com.

Fortunately, the at-fault driver was found and is now in jail. He was charged with a hit and run accident.

Mr. Bethea is survived by his wife, who is grief stricken due to this sudden, tragic loss. My heart goes out to her. These accidents are so frustrating, because there is a part of you that thinks this could have been avoided if only the driver had been more responsible.

Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents are not uncommon. Roughly 5,000 pedestrians are killed and nearly 64,000 are injured in accidents every year in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Association.
