Motorcycle Accident in Wilmington Leaves Driver in Critical Condition | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

Saturday night, a motorcycle accident happened in Wilmington , NC that put one man’s life in critical condition.  According to police, David Tollefson, 48, was driving along Carolina Beach Road towards Saint Andrews drive when all of a sudden a Blue Durango pulled out in front of him.  Tollefson tried to avoid the collision, swerved but slid into the SUV instead.

The man was immediately sent to the hospital as he sustained serious injuries.  Hospital claims that he was still listed in critical condition 24 hours after the accident.  Tishko Johnson, 26, driver of the Durango who was clearly at fault was not injured at all.

According to a website getyourownbike.com, motorcycle rider fatalities increased for the tenth straight year in 2007.  During this year, 5,154 motorcyclists lost their lives in fatal highway crashes.  Fifty percent of all motorcycles involved in fatal crashes collided with another type of motor vehicle in transport. In two-vehicle crashes, 78 percent of the motorcycles involved were struck in the front. Only 5 percent were struck in the rear.

Over, 90 percent of all two-vehicle crashes involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle in which the motorcycle rider died occurred on non-interstate roadways.  Fifty percent or more of all two-vehicle crashes involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle in which the motorcycle rider died were intersection crashes.

In 2007, there were 2,332 two-vehicle fatal crashes involving a motorcycle and another type of vehicle. In 40 percent of these crashes, the other vehicle was turning left while the motorcycle was going straight, passing, or overtaking the vehicle.  It is always important to use head gears, pads and observe precautionary while driving motorcycles to avoid fatalities.
