Another N.C. Child Struck and Killed while Exiting School Bus

Comments (0)

A 10-year-old Winston-Salem boy who was struck by an SUV after getting off a school bus has died from his injuries. The accident occurred in front of the young victim’s house, in the 400 block of East Wright Street, at approximately 3:30 p.m.

According to reports from law enforcement, the young boy had just gotten off the school bus and was walking east when the accident occurred. As he approached his home, a 2014 Toyota Rav4, which was being driven by a 21-year-old woman also from Winston-Salem, was also traveling east. The  vehicle suddenly  left the road and drove into a grassy area, striking the young child.

After hitting the victim with her SUV, the driver then drove off, but then drove into a tree and a fence a short distance away from where she hit the boy. She exited the SUV and ran off. Police took the driver into custody a short time later, although no details of that arrest have been released. She has been charged with felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor death and failure to maintain lane. Bond was set at $35,000.

The young victim was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he later died from the injuries sustained in the crash.

Police did not say what caused the driver of the SUV to leave the road and run into the victim, but investigators did reconstruct the accident in an effort to finding clues to the fatal crash.

School districts across North Carolina have had serious issues with children being struck as they are getting on or off school buses, and too many times, those crashes have been fatal ones. Families who have lost their child to a driver who chose to ignore the flashing lights and stop sign of a school bus should contact an experienced North Carolina wrongful death attorney to find out what legal recourse they may have against that driver.
