Falling Soccer Goal Kills Third-Grader in Newton Grove, NC | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A 9-year-old boy from Newton Grove, North Carolina (NC), died after a soccer goal fell on his head. Sources say the boy was playing on a soccer field after church on a Sunday morning with his relatives and friends. The goal was not secured to the ground.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, goals like the one that took the child’s life typically weigh between 150 and 500 pounds. In the past 33 years, the structures have been associated with at least 28 deaths. Officials say it is “iperative” that all movable soccer goals are properly secured and anchored.

Any time children are around heavy sporting equipment, the utmost care needs to go into protecting their safety. When such objects tip over, they become incredibly dangerous. If you own a soccer goal like the one involved in this tragic accident and do not have the means to keep it secured, such as sandbags or stakes, consider putting the goal away. Another option parents and coaches can consider is using plastic goals that cause much less damage when tipped over.
