NC Couple Wants Answers About Hit-and-Run Crash That Amputated Their Legs | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A 2009 hit and run accident by a pickup truck left a couple each without a left leg, and the driver has never been caught.

Troopers are still investigating the crash involving a married couple on a motorcycle. That September 4th changed the lives of the pair forever. They have been unable to work since the accident, although both have been fitted with prosthetic legs. Sadly, they can recall all too vividly the crash that occurred at 9 pm while on their Harley Sportster as they were heading home to Catawba.

That’s when they saw an oncoming Dodge truck cross the centerline on a curve. It hit the husband, a 54-year-old man, and his wife, a 49 year-old woman, knocking them off their bike. As the victims lay bleeding, the trucker simply drove off. Two helicopters had to be summoned to take the pair to the hospital, where they stayed for two months for medical treatment.

According to the Hickory Record, the husband is quoted as saying, “Whoever did this, I forgive them for hitting us, but I can’t forgive them for leaving us to die. Someone knows who did this. They just need to do the right thing now. Just step up to the plate.”

Sgt. Brett Hipp, one of the members of the Highway Patrol continuing the investigation, states “We want justice for the victims. We just haven’t turned anything up yet.” Any information concerning this incident should be provided to the nearest North Carolina Highway Patrol office.
