Over 70 Vehicles in Multi-Car Accident, Seventeen Injured

Comments (0)

A 75-car multi-vehicle accident took place on Interstate 95, Maine and law enforcement says it is the biggest crash in that state’s history.

The crash began in the northbound lanes in one town – Carmel – and stretched for three miles into another – Etna. Police say the cause of the accident was the bad winter weather, combined with drivers who were speeding. The crash occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m., just in time for the morning commute.

A spokesperson for the Maine State Police said because of the massive amount of vehicles involved in the crash, investigators may never be able to determine what the triggering incident actually was. He pointed out that the six inches of snow which had fallen overnight in the area was wet and stuck to the backs of vehicles. This blocked other drivers’ views of brake lights. He added that investigators had not found evidence suggesting a single vehicle caused the pileup. Besides cars and SUVs, the crash also included a school bus and tractor trailers.

There were so many vehicles piled up on the roads, that state troopers began walking on top of vehicles in their search for injured victims.  Seventeen people were transported to area hospitals with injuries. Officials were amazed that there were no fatalities in the huge incident. Upon hearing of the pileup, area hospitals began preparing for the worst, expecting multiple severely injured victims to arrive.

This massive pile-up is a good reminder of just how dangerous it can be driving in winter weather. Although this accident happened in Maine, residents here in North Carolina are also dealing with winter storm woes, and this serves as a good reminder to take it slow when traveling on snowy and icy roads.
