Richmond Cyclist Dies Of Brain Injury After Running Red Light | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Richmond Police, a Virginia cyclist was killed on the evening of April 15 after running a red light.

Reports say that 37-year-old Steven Smith of Richmond, Virginia, was riding his bike while not wearing a helmet on Lombardy Street when he rode through an intersection without heeding a red light. He slammed into the side of an SUV that had the right of way on Brook Street. The VA bike accident took place near Virginia Union University. No one in the SUV was injured in the crash.

No charges or citations will be filed in relation to the bike crash, which took place on Monday night at 8:10 PM.

An ambulance rushed Smith to the nearby VCU Medical Center where he died of serious head injuries and brain trauma. Cyclist safety advocates say that wearing a helmet significantly lowers the chances of suffering a fatal brain injury during a bicycle crash.
