Small Plane Crashes into Florida Publix Grocery: Injuring Five | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

You can control where you shop for groceries but you certainly can’t control the chance that an experimental airplane will crash into your supermarket.  Unfortunately for several people in the Northgate Shopping Center in Deland, Florida (FL) a twin-engine aircraft did just that and plunged into the Publix supermarket.

As a pilot as well as a Virginia (VA) aviation crash injury attorney I know this situation is very rare.  Five people on the ground were injured in the airplane crash.  Special situations, like airplane crashes, call for specialized injury lawyers who are experienced in handling this type of case.  If you were injured in a car accident would you let a lawyer who had never driven a car defend you?  Chances are, you wouldn’t.

So what is the annual risk of being killed in a plane crash? For the average American it is about 1 in 11 million.  Of course some people fly more than others and their chances are higher.  However if you compare that, for example, to the annual risk of being killed in a motor vehicle crash for the average American, which is about 1 in 5,000, driving looks a lot more dangerous.  Still those odds aren’t very reassuring to those who were injured during the airplane crash and we wish them a speedy recovery.
