Smithfield Man Dies in Car Crash as his Vehicle Runs Off Road | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A Smithfield, North Carolina (N.C.) man died in a single-vehicle fatal crash that caused traffic delays last Wednesday evening along Interstate 95, according to Johnston County sheriff’s deputies.

The victim of the car accident, Dusty Fowler, 34, of Smithfield, was killed when his vehicle ran off the road near mile-marker 97 at approximately 7:30 p.m., the state Highway Patrol said.

North Carolina State Troopers indicated that the car was traveling at a very high rate of speed when it struck an abandoned parked vehicle, then an embankment and finally coming to rest at a tree. All northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for awhile after the wreck.

Sad as it is when someone we love dies tragically and unexpected, there is usually a factor or factors that have contributed to a fatal car crash. In this case it appears to be speed. Speeding limits your reaction time – that is your ability to control a situation. The faster you drive, the less time you have to react. The faster you drive the more momentum your vehicle has to overcome. The faster you drive the odds of death increase. Sadly…there are usually factors of fault at work…
