A hit-and-run collision in Lexington, South Carolina (SC), at around 5:30 am on May 20, 2015, left a motorcycle rider dead in the roadway from blunt force trauma. The fatal wreck occurred at the intersection of U.S. 1/West Main Street and Barr Road, with witnesses reporting that the at-fault driver was behind the wheel of a burgundy GMC sport utility vehicle.
Police were able to track down the SUV by midday and to take the GMC's suspected driver into custody by 3 pm. According to television station WACH, that man now faces criminal charges for "leaving the scene where a death has occurred, failure to yield the right of way and simple possession of marijuana." It is unclear if he was under the influence of drugs when the deadly crash occurred, nor do investigators know why the driver of the SUV struck the bike and decided to flee the scene.
My Carolina wrongful death attorney colleagues and I want to express our appreciation for the law enforcement officers who quickly identified and apprehended the person who appears to have killed the motorcycle rider. Few things can leave a family struggling financially and emotionally more than losing a loved one in an unsolved hit-and-run collision. Coming to terms with the unexpected and sudden death of a spouse, sibling, parent and friend is always difficult. Doing so when you know someone inflicted those hardships on you but not being able to hold that individual accountable can be devastating.
