What Happened:

A patron of Katy’s Bar and Grill in Wilmington, North Carolina became furious that a woman insulted his political beliefs, and he intentionally drove his car over the curb and onto the patio with the intent to harm the woman, police stated.

According to a witness who called 911:  “A car drove into Katy’s bar – it was a green Honda, they headed south on college road, they fled.”

Two people were injured, one with broken bones and lacerations and the other with minor injuries. No injuries were life threatening. There were unconfirmed reports of other customers with minor injuries.

The accused has been charged with 11 counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, 1 count of Assault with a Deadly Weapon inflicting serious injury, 1 count Hit and Run, 1 count Injury to Real Property, and 1 count Careless and Reckless Operation.

The parents of the accused bonded him out of jail because they said he needs to seek mental treatment.

The damages to the restaurant are not yet known.

North Carolina Personal Injury Lawyer Perspective:

We are relieved that no one suffered life threatening injuries in this alleged crime, and we hope that the accused gets the mental health care that he clearly needs.

The injured parties in this case should talk to a personal injury attorney, because they are very likely eligible for financial restitution for their injuries, lost work time and medical expenses. Even if the accused is later convicted on some or all counts in this incident, this does not preclude the injured from filing civil claims.
