According to an article in The Virginian Pilot, police were conducting a traffic checkpoint, when an approaching car nearly struck another vehicle. The driver sped off forcing the officer to chase the car down Interstate 664 South. Due to traffic, the officer could not chase the fleeing car any further. As the car exited the tunnel he rear-ended another vehicle causing the vehicle to overturn. The two people in the car, fleeing from the scene of the crash, left the injured passenger in the overturned car helpless. The two men who ran from the car wreck were chased by the police officer for a short time before being caught. The driver of the car that flipped over was taken to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
