A former Navy sailor was convicted last week in Virginia Beach for a fatal DUI crash in 2014 that left a biker dead.
According to local media, the 30 year-old man was sentenced to 27 months in prison. He was charged with involuntary manslaughter and a 2nd offense DUI within 5-10 years.
The driver had two prior DUIs: one in West Virginia in 2007 and New York in 2009.
Our personal injury law firm always approves of seeing convicted drivers serving time in prison. Their victims are usually left either dead or seriously injured. They deserve a measure of justice.
In our personal injury practice, we specialize in filing civil lawsuits against convicted drunk drivers. In addition to that person serving jail time, he also should be sued for wrongful death in civil court. That way, the family left behind can receive financial damages for the great wrong done to them. In many cases, families can receive compensation for lost wages, medical bills, funeral expenses and pain and suffering.
If your case is severe enough, the drunk driver may be required to pay punitive damages as well. Most often, these funds will be paid out by the driver’s car insurance policy.
