Three people were killed in a wrong-way accident in Franklin County, Virginia (VA). The crash occurred on U.S. Route 220 near Boones Mill.

Our thoughts go out to everyone involved in this tragic accident. Drivers and passengers from all four wehicles were put at risk because of one driver’s carelessness behind the wheel. The other drivers probably never saw the accident coming. After all, they were on the right side of the highway, following the proper rules of the road. It is unclear why the driver made the mistake of traveling in the wrong direction on the highway, but one has to wonder if drugs, alcohol, or even a medical emergency might have played a role. Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the victims.

There is probably nothing scarier than seeing a wrong-way driver headed right for you. Signs, signals and traffic barriers all help prevent head-on collisions, but those road safety features cannot stop a driver who ignores them.
