Severed Ureter During Abdominal Surgery

WHAT HAPPENED:
Our client was a 45-year-old patient of the defendant, an obstetrician gynecologist. During a routine gynecological exam it was determined that she had a small mass on one of her ovaries.  The OB/GYN recommended that the ovary be removed and, as a precautionary measure, that the other ovary be removed as well. The surgery was performed laparoscopically which avoids the necessity for a large abdominal incision. However, the surgeon's vision is somewhat restricted because of the nature of the instruments used during a laparoscopy and, unbeknownst to him, while removing our client's ovaries he severed one of her ureters and did not know he had done so.

Our client endured months of pain, discomfort and numerous surgeries to correct this doctor's mistakes. 

KEY LEGAL STRATEGY:
One of the keys to successfully resolving this case for our client was the fact that she had previously had her uterus removed.  This should have made her abdominal area much easier to visualize during the ovary surgery and the fact that the OB/GYN severed a ureter and failed to realize he had done it severely aggravated by this fact.
