Chesapeake, VA Leads Region in Number of Big Rig Accidents

Federal statistics reveal that Chesapeake, Virginia (VA), holds the dubious distinction of being the third-most likely place in the Commonwealth in which to get into a crash with a tractor-trailer, 18-wheeler, tanker truck, semi or other large commercial truck. Only Fairfax and Prince William counties present greater risks of collisions involving trucks.

In 2009, 108 commercial trucks crashed in Chesapeake. Many of these of these accidents caused injuries and deaths, and a large percentage also involved cars, minivans, SUVs, pickups and pedestrians.

Chesapeake probably sees so many truck wrecks because its has only a handful a major roads and highways that attract heavy truck traffic. The portion of 1-64/I-664 in the north of the city serves numerous industries and warehouses and hosts daily miles-long backups dotted with big rigs. The confusing Bowers Hill interchange certainly provides the location of more than its share of deadly truck accidents. To the south, the state highways of Dominion Boulevard/Route 17, Chesapeake Expressway/Route 168 and Battlefield Boulevard and Centerville Turnpike, which merge mid-city going towards the North Carolina (NC) border, also carry many trucks each day.
