Hurricane Season means more accidents on highways, roads and tunnels in Hampton Roads

Recently, the Virginian Pilot has begun reporting on the possibilities of tropical storms and hurricanes which is typical for the Hampton Roads area at this time of year. As residents of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, the Carolinas and surrounding cities in the Tidewater area, it comes as no surprise that this time of year tends to bring anxiety as we brace for a number of possible weather related accidents.

In the event of a serious threat, one major problem could be local roadways and congestion coming in and out of the Hampton Roads area. With tunnels such as the HRBT, Monitor-Merrimac, Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and the Portsmouth/Norfolk downtown tunnels all within miles of each other, travelers must be cautious of possible accidents during these periods because of increased drivers on the road.

On the Outer Banks of North Carolina, tourist season is the bread and butter for this vacation hotspot. This small chain of islands is also frequently battered by hurricane season, especially in recent years. USA Today reported that global warming has caused stronger hurricanes in the past few years which increases the likelihood of being affected by one of them. In the event of a weather-related threat, according to the Department of Homeland Security, “by 2030…it would take 46 hours to clear U.S. 158 and 31 hours to clear U.S. 64 through Columbia, South Carolina.”

Any type of backup or accident reported on these tunnels and highways within the surrounding Hampton Roads area could cause backups for miles and major headaches for travelers. Keep your attention on the road and observe road conditions when driving during this time of year. Also it is important to remember that if you have been injured in an auto accident you should always seek legal representation from an experienced personal injury attorney.
