http://www.hsinjurylaw.com/practice_areas/virginia-beach-medical-malpractice-lawyers-norfolk-attorneys-va.cfm - Virginia Medical Negligence Lawyer Jim Lewis talks about gallbladder surgery.
The gallbladder is a small organ that aids mainly in fat digestion and concentrates bile produced by the liver. In adults, the gallbladder measures about 3 ½ inches in length and 1 ½ inches in diameter. The gallbladder connects to the digestive system through a duct known as a cystic duct then runs into the common bile duct. Gallbladder removal surgery is usually performed laparoscopically. The problem with this is that it is important that the surgeon properly identify the cystic duct and the common bile duct when performing the procedure.
Our Virginia medical malpractice injury lawyers frequently see people whose surgeons mistook the common bile duct for the cystic duct when performing laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. Injuring the common bile duct is a very serious condition that usually results in the individual becoming extremely sick. Sometimes, it takes multiple surgeries to correct this injury and people are frequently left with digestive systems that don't work as well as they did before the common bile duct injury.
This is an injury that can be avoided if the surgeon is careful in identifying the cystic duct and common bile duct before cutting either one of them.
If you or someone you know has suffered a bile duct injury during a laparoscopic gallbladder surgery please give me a call or visit our web site at hsinjurylaw.com. I'll be happy to discuss the case and can probably help you in pursuing a claim.
