Hi.  My name is John Cooper and I am one of the lawyers here at Shapiro, Cooper, Lewis & Appleton, where all we do is injury law.  As a personal injury lawyer for twenty years, I regularly get calls telling me that someone has been in a car wreck and needs help.  If there has been a car or truck wreck, where you or a family member has been injured, the first thing is to make sure to get the appropriate medical care.  The person’s health is always the most important thing.  

It is also extremely important to contact a competent injury attorney as soon as possible to find out what the rights are for the person who has been involved in a car or truck accident.  The lawyer in NC or VA will need to know whose fault the accident was.  I will want to confirm that you, the potential client, did not cause the wreck.

The car or truck accident typically involves two different insurance claims.  The personal injury claim, which is what I would work on for someone, and the property damage claim, which is getting the vehicle fixed and getting a rent a car to get around to doctor’s appointments and work before the car is repaired.  I will often give people advice on how to deal with their property damage claim, even though I am not actively representing them on that part of the case.  Because I deal with insurance people daily, I know how important it is to have a professional sort through these issues for the client in a vehicle crash case.

Sometimes people need help figuring out where they should get their medical treatment.  Typically, the best thing to do for a serious injury is to go to the ER.  Having worked in Hampton Roads, VA for 20 years as an attorney and having grown up here, I know lots of doctors and which ones will provide good medical care and be helpful to someone in the situation of a injury from a car wreck.  If you are hurt, you need to get in the hands of a competent and caring medical professional as soon as possible.

At the end of the case, the goal of the personal injury lawyer is to get the person back in as close to their condition as possible before the wreck.  This means that any economic, emotional or physical problem that was caused by the car accident should be addressed in any settlement or jury trial.  A good personal injury lawyer will make sure that the person’s future medical needs and possible economic losses into the future will also be addressed and taken care of.
