$10 Million TBI Sledding Lawsuit Filed in WA | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A family from Bellingham, Washington (WA) is suing a local school district for $10 million after their son suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other injuries in a sledding accident on school property in 2011.

The boy, who was 10 at the time, was sledding on a hill behind the school when he slammed into a concrete barrier that is part of a baseball dugout.  The school was closed at the time, and the boy was with a parent. In addition to a serious concussion, the child suffered facial fractures, broken teeth and kidney and liver lacerations.

He was flown to a local hospital and was treated for 30 days. The lawsuit states that the boy’s brain injuries have caused him academic and social problems.

As TBI personal injury lawyers in Virginia, we know how devastating a traumatic brain injury can be to an adult or child. We have settled TBI cases many times, in one case for $46 million after a client suffered a TBI when a train derailed and smashed into his place of work. That changed his life forever, and his extensive brain damage meant that he needed a nurse for the rest of his life. Luckily, we were able to get him the financial compensation he needed and deserved.

Our Traumatic Brain Injury Guide is useful for those who have suffered a TBI and are not sure of the legal path forward.

We hope that the case above is reasonably settled; while the parent bears responsibility for allowing his child to sled at a closed school, the child does have medical needs that must be addressed.
