The crash occurred on I-90 westbound near Charlton MA. State police said that there were three vehicles involved in an earlier wreck. One was a 2014 Freightliner big rig, and the two cars were a Toyota Rav4 and a 2011 Toyota Camry.
While the troopers were on the scene, a 2007 Freightliner tractor trailer changed lanes and smashed into the Camry. The driver of that car was thrown out, and the passenger was trapped inside.
The driver who was thrown from the car is in the hospital with serious injuries, and the passenger who was trapped died at the scene.
We deeply regret the loss of life in this avoidable tragedy, but it is all too common for tractor trailer drivers to lose control of their rigs and seriously injure or kill innocent drivers. In our personal injury practice, we have worked on many cases of truck driver negligence.
In a 2006 case, we settled a wrongful death suit for $2.4 million involving a truck driver rear ending our client’s vehicle. The crash caused the car to flip and kill our client. He was survived by his wife and adult children.
Both accidents above show that tractor trailer drivers must slow down and drive very carefully when they are near slow or stopped traffic. We hope that all truck drivers will bear this in mind the next time they get behind the wheel.
