14-Year-Old Killed at Bus Stop in Garner, NC | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

What Happened

On March 25, 2013 a 14-year-old girl was tragically killed at her bus stop near Garner, North Carolina (NC). According to a North Carolina State Highway Patrol spokesperson the young girl was crossing Benson Highway when she was struck by a Pontiac sedan.  The girl was crossing the street to get to her bus to Garner Magnet High School. According to witnesses the bus was slowing down with its amber lights flashing but not its red lights, nor had the stop arm been extended. Police have stated that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the accident, but note it was still dark at the time.

The North Carolina Wrongful Death Lawyers’ Perspective

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of the young girl. As a parent I could not imagine the pain of losing a child. It’s understandable that it will take some time before the family of the girl is ready to pursue a wrongful death claim, but they should keep in mind the statute of limitations. It would be wise to speak with a North Carolina (NC) wrongful death attorney to know what the statute of limitations is. Each state has its own statute of limitations, in North Carolina (NC) it is two years from the date of the death. Contacting a North Carolina (NC) wrongful death lawyer quickly will allow for the attorneys to have the most time to gather evidence to compile a case and be fully prepared when the family is ready to pursue a wrongful death claim. While nothing can stop the pain, contacting a North Carolina (NC) wrongful death lawyer could grant the family a great deal of serenity. An attorney will be able to investigate the scene of the accident and gather evidence so the family does not have to relive the catastrophe. A minor child (under the age of 18) is typically not contributing to the household income, but a child contributes in other ways. Parents therefore can recover, in most states, for the loss of the child’s companionship and affection.
