In his latest post to our firm’s Virginia Beach Injuryboard blog site, my colleague Rick Shapiro reports on an important jury verdict for a merchant seaman who developed the fatal lung disease mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos while working on a ship. Rick writes that the case illustrates how companies that take over competitors also become liable for the harms caused to employees by the competitor’s negligence. Another key lesson to take from the outcome of the trial — a $1.45 million award for the plaintiff — is that even two months of exposure to a toxic or cancer-causing substance can make a company liable for a former worker’s occupational illness.
