2012 Auto Manufacturer Recalls | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

What Happened

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) manufacturers filed more than 650 safety recalls, affecting over 17.8 million vehicles, child seats and vehicle equipment, during calendar year 2012. This had a major impact on influencing the recall of more than 9 million vehicles and 60,000 items of vehicle equipment, including tires and child safety seats.

Many recalls begin because of consumer complaints, or reports of a product that has malfunctioned and caused physical harm. The NHTSA received more than 40,000 complaints in 2012, which was deemed the “lifeblood of the recall process” by an administrator of the NHTSA.

The NHTSA believes that recalls should be addressed immediately by proper authorities and urges consumers to continue their great impact on recalled products. Consumers can stay up to date with information at www.safercar.gov.
