3 Children, 1 Adult Die When Semi Rear-Ends Car

A predawn rear-end collision on I-95 through Colleton County, South Carolina (SC), left four people dead and three others seriously injured. According to news reports, a tractor-trailer struck a car from behind near the town of Yemassee. The deceased were identified, but not named, as three children and one adult in the smaller vehicle. Two other adults in the car and the truck driver survived.

State Highway Patrol officials learned of the deadly wreck just after 4 am on November 11, 2106. First responders found the car trapped under the semi's cab, and all three of the children who lost their lives had been riding in the back seat.

No charges were immediately filed against the commercial truck driver. If the semi operator is found to be at fault for causing the fatal rear-end collision, one possible explanation for the tragedy could be fatigue and falling asleep behind the wheel after exceeding the legal limit on hours of operation. Speeding, distraction and impairment by drugs or alcohol might also have played a role.

My Carolina wrongful death attorney colleagues and I know from helping many families tragically affected by truck crashes that it only takes a moment of negligence or inattention while driving a tractor-trailer to leave innocent people injured and dead. Our deepest condolences go out to the individuals who lost loved ones in this interstate wreck in Colleton County. We also hope the injured survivors make full and rapid recoveries.
