Actor Freddie Smith, best known for his role on the soap opera Days of Our Lives, sustained minor injuries in a car accident that occurred in Ashtabula, Ohio. Smith’s girlfriend, Alyssa Tabit, who was a passenger in the car, was critically injured.
According to law enforcement reports, the couple was heading to Kingsville Township, Ohio when the accident occurred. Smith failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the car. The vehicle then crossed the centerline, landed in a culvert and flipped over.
Smith was able to get out of the car, but emergency responders had to remove a trapped Tabit from the damaged vehicle. Once freed, she was airlifted to a hospital in Youngstown, where it was reported she had sustained critical injuries. The hospital has not released any information on Tabit, but some media outlets reported that she was cognitive prior to surgery.
Law enforcement also reported that speed and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, however, as of this writing, no charges against Smith have been announced. In Virginia, if a person is injured in an accident caused by a driver whose blood alcohol content (BAC) is higher than the legal limit, a court can award the victim punitive damages for pain and loss suffered because of the driver’s lack of disregard for the safety of others.
