Airbag Trouble Responsible For Yet Another Major Auto Recall, This Time From Nissan | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

What Happened:

Nissan has announced that it will be launching a recall next month involving a possibly faulty airbag sensor. The problem can cause the front passenger airbag to fail to deploy in a crash, a serious problem that needs a fast fix.

Nissan and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say that the trouble affects multiple new models. The 2013 Altima, Nissan’s top-selling vehicle, along with the Pathfinder SUV and the Sentra compact sedan are included. Also covered in the recall are the 2013 Nissan Leaf and the 2013 Infiniti JX35 SUV.

The recall notice revealed that Nissan has built 87,000 of the affected vehicles so far this year. However, the total number of cars impacted by the recall has not been revealed yet as Nissan says it is still attempting to narrow down the window of trouble over the airbag sensor.

Nissan says that the problem arose with a supplier for the airbag sensor that changed a process which then lead to malfunctions. The malfunctions are serious enough that they could end up permanently disabling the airbag.

The Virginia Injury Attorney’s Perspective:

The problem Nissan is facing with its airbag is not a new one. As we wrote about last month, airbag troubles are frequent causes for automotive recalls. The issue is not whether airbags save lives, a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed that in one year airbags typically save upwards of 2,700 lives. The problem, in the case of many of these recalls, just like with Nissan, is making sure the airbags will inflate when they’re supposed to and that they do not inflate when they aren’t.
