A talented South Carolina high-school basketball star was critically injured in a car accident caused by a drunk driver, leaving many who know the young girl concerned that the injuries may seriously the all-star player’s future.
The young victim, who is a senior at Pendleton High School in Anderson, was driving a Kia on Highway 76 near Summers Drive at approximately 8:30 pm when her car was hit head-on by a pickup truck being driven by a 52-year-old Anderson man.
Police have charged the man with felony driving under the influence, having an open container of beer or wine in his pickup, transporting alcohol with the seal broken and a seat belt violation. His bail has been set at $30,000 and as of this writing, he still remains in jail.
The victim was airlifted from the crash site to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where she remains in the intensive care unit after undergoing six hours of surgery. According to her family, she has suffered serious injuries to her left side and they are concerned these injuries may permanently affect the young athlete’s ability to play basketball. The victim, who has plans to attend Anderson University in the fall, was just named to the North-South All Star basketball team.
This young victim, who has a long road of recovery ahead of her, may never be able to play the sport she obviously excels at because someone decided to drink and drive.
