Afternoon commuters on Interstate 95 in Dunn, N.C. got quite the shock on their drive Thursday afternoon when a car suddenly fell onto the northbound lanes of the highway, bringing traffic to a halt.
According to police reports, the car fell off of a transport truck which was traveling on the interstate. As the truck went under the Springbranch Road bridge, a car on top of the truck hit the bridge. As the car fell off the truck, it hit a passing SUV. A second vehicle was hit by debris which fell off the bridge.
The Highway Patrol has cited the driver of the truck for transporting an overweight load.
Luckily, no injuries were reported from the accident. That is not often the case. There were more than 4,000 truck accidents in North Carolina last year caused by trucks which were transporting overweight and oversized loads. Hundreds of people were left with serious injuries from those accidents, and more than 60 people were killed.
Our personal injury law firm has reported on dozens of overweight and oversized truck accidents, including a recent case where a jury awarded the husband of a woman killed in an accident caused by an overweight truck over $13 million.
When a person is injured in a truck accident, it is often not only the truck driver who can be held liable for the accident. Responsible parties may also include the trucking company itself, as well as the loading company.
