Child Survives Kentucky Plane Crash which Killed Other Family Members

A 7 year-old girl miraculously survived a small plane crash that killed four other people, including the child’s parents, her 9 year-old sister and 14 year-old cousin. All four were residents of Nashville, Illinois.

The Piper PA-34 crashed as it was flying over rural southwestern Kentucky. According the Federal Aviation Association (FAA), the plane had departed from Tallahassee Regional Airport, Florida, and was bound for Mount Vernon, Illinois.

The small plane had reported it was having engine trouble to air traffic controllers shortly before the crash. The pilot told controllers he was going to attempt to land at Kentucky Dam State (Park) Airport. Instead, the plane crashed less than 10 miles away from the airport.

After the plane crashed, the little girl was the only one alive. She thought her family was knocked unconscious. She was dressed in only shorts, a short-sleeve shirt and one sock, but braved the frigid January Kentucky cold to find help. She walked approximately one mile from the crash when she came to a house and knocked on the owner’s door. The young child was treated at the Lourdes Hospital in Paducah but was released the next day.

Law enforcement and other officials are floored over the young child’s surviving the crash. “She literally fell out of the sky into a dark hole and didn't have anybody but her own will to live and get help for her family,” Kentucky Police Lt. Brent White said. “Absolutely amazing.”

The FAA is investigating the crash to try to determine what went wrong. Our condolences go out to this little girl and her family, as we are reminded how quickly life can change. In this event, a tragedy and a miracle happened all in one heartbeat.
