Death by Pokémon GO: Smartphone Apps and Distracted Driving Crash Study

A new study found that in the first five months after its release last year, the popular virtual reality game Pokémon GO responsible for at least 145,000 car crashes. The study, conducted by researchers from Purdue University, also discovered that there were 250 people killed and approximately 29,000 injured in these crashes.

The frequency rate for crashes that were close to “PokéStops” was almost 30 percent higher than at other intersections. A PokéStop is a location where gamers can obtain collectibles that help them to progress in the game.

Researchers calculated the national cost of these crashes were between $2 and $7.3 billion during the first five months of its release.

The Distractions of Smart Phones

The study also concluded that as dangerous as the game Pokemon Go was and the increased risks of car crashes it caused, it is actually smartphones themselves, along with the thousands of apps they offer, which make create the distractions for drivers behind the wheels of vehicles.

Smartphones and their distractions are also the reason cited by the Insurance Information Institute for the almost 20 percent increase in insurance premiums during the past five years. These devices have proven to be the primary cause of distracted driving crashes.

And it is not just drivers who are distracted by smartphones. The study pointed out that many pedestrians crossing streets are so focused on their smartphones, that distracted walking has now become a legitimate danger, just like distracted driving. These pedestrians are so consumed by what is on their phone that they are unaware of traffic signals or oncoming vehicles. In fact, distracted walking has become so common, that some communities have begun enacting distracted walking laws.
