Drunk Driver Kills Whiteville, NC Woman
Covington died at the scene of the wreck and her husband is listed in intensive care at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, according to wect.com. The Covington's son also suffered a fractured neck.
Our deepest sympahties go out to the Covington family. In the blink of an eye, members of this family had their lives shattered. It is so frustrating to read about these types of preventable car wrecks. If only the at-fault driver had exercised more responsibility and not gotten behind the wheel intoxicated, maybe this tragic accident could have been avoided.
The at-fault driver will be charged with DWI by police when he is released from the hospital. Members of the Covington family should consider speaking to a wrongful death attorney in North Carolina. When a defendant causes serious injury or death due to reckless or wanton conduct, courts usually allow a plaintiff to seek punitive damages. This is a form of additional compensation to the plaintiff that is meant to send a signal to the community that the defendant's behavior will not be tolerated.
