Drunk Driver Smashes into N.C. Highway Patrol Cars | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A drunk driver smashed into four North Carolina Highway Patrol cars parked for traffic duty for the Coca Cola 600 NASCAR race. The incident occurred around 3:30 in the afternoon and one of the troopers caught it all on an in car video system.

According to police reports, the driver, who was driving a white 2013 Lexus, was exiting Interstate 485 outer loop to U.S. 29 and failed to slow down at the top of the ramp. The driver hit the raised concrete curb at the top of the ramp, spinning out of control, and struck the patrol cars when he crossed northbound U.S. 29. Two of the troopers were injured while trying to escape the collision. They were taken to Carolinas Medical Center and treated for leg injuries.

Troopers reported a nine year-old child was in the front seat of the Lexus, restrained by a seat belt. Because of the strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver, he was given two breathalyzer tests, with the lowest reading measuring .14, almost double the legal blood alcohol limit of .08. He was arrested and charged with DWI, reckless driving, and child abuse. Two of the patrol cars and the Lexus were towed from the scene.
