A man faces driving under the influence charges in relation to a wrong-way crash that left another person dead in Chesterfield County, Virginia (VA), shortly before 1 am on December 27, 2016. The fatal collision happened on Route 288 near the turnoff to Chester Road.
According to news reports, the man behind the wheel of the pickup lost control of his vehicle and ran across the highway median. He struck a car traveling in the opposite direction and flipped over. The force of the impact sent the car into a guardrail, which inflicted deadly injuries on the car's driver. The man in the pickup survived despite not wearing a seatbelt.
The alleged DUI offense could mean the wrong-way driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In either scenario, making the decision to drive after getting drunk or stoned appears to have set the stage for losing control and taking a life. Such reckless behavior endangers everyone. This danger often increases during the year-end holidays, particularly New Year's Eve.
This year, AAA is offering free tows and rides home to anyone who overindulges at New Year's parties. Contacting the program could prevent tragedies like this one in Chesterfield County.
