Early Morning Drunk Driver Injured Four Others In North Carolina Crash | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

A North Carolina motorist is now facing criminal charges after causing an accident that left six people injured earlier this month in Wilmington. The accident involved 43-year-old Brian Greene who crashed his Subaru SUV into a minivan.

Police say Greene drove his Subaru through a red light and smashed into a van in the intersection of North College Road and MLK Parkway. The minivan was an airport taxi that was carrying four passengers. All of the passengers in the minivan and Greene himself were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Police say the accident happened early in the morning, around 5:30 a.m. Surprisingly, given the time of day, Greene was drunk. Police have since charged Greene with driving while intoxicated, failure to stop at a red light and driving without insurance.

Though such daytime drunk driving accidents are less common than overnight incidents, a surprisingly large number happen during daylight hours, when many people least expect to encounter a drunk driver. Law enforcement officials say that morning drunk drivers often fall into one of two categories: chronic alcoholics who never stop drinking and those who get back behind the wheel too soon after a wild night, before the alcohol has had a chance to totally wear off.

Though the driver in this case unfortunately lacks proper automotive insurance, that does not mean hope is lost for those injured in the accident. Though the driver lacks insurance, it does not mean that the expensive medical bills will necessarily fall on the victims’ shoulders. A North Carolina individual involved in an accident with an uninsured driver can utilize his or uninsured/under insured motorist insurance, which provides coverage for such occasions.
