A one-year-old baby girl is dead after the SUV she was riding in was slammed into by a Chevy Silverado. The fatal crash occurred on South Generals Boulevard near Robin Road in Lincolnton, NC.
According to details released by law enforcement, the young victim’s father was driving his vehicle when he noticed a funeral procession and slowed down and eased over to the shoulder of the road. The Chevy pickup, driven by a 38-year-old man, did not slow down at all, and plowed into the back of the vehicle carrying the baby and her parents. Witnesses at the scene report no sounds of brakes screeching, just the loud bang when the truck hit the car, and then the sounds of a mother screaming, “My baby, my baby.”
The funeral session was being led by a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, who was the first officer on the scene. The child was not responsive was taken to CHS-Lincoln and later airlifted to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. She was pronounced dead the following day. Her parents announced that they had donated her organs and saved the lives of three other children.
“Our beautiful daughter . . . is now walking the streets of gold and hasn't got a care in the world. We believe she was put here to save other [families] from going through what we had to overcome. Giving other kids the chance to fulfill life to the fullest and enjoy all that life has to offer.”
Police are still investigating the fatal crash and expect to charge the driver of the pickup.
