Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Virginia Highlights Rural Road Dangers | Shapiro, Washburn & Sharp

As happens too often in the semirural areas of Hampton Roads, Virginia (VA), like Suffolk and Chesapeake, a road lacking sidewalks and crosswalks was the scene of a fatal pedestrian accident during the night of May 4, 2012.

According to Virginia State Police, a Chevy Cavalier struck an 84-year-old woman while she was in the roadway of Route 501/Lussardi Drive in Brookneal, VA. The small town is in Carroll County, southwest of Roanoke and bordering North Carolina.

The woman died from her injuries while being transported by ambulance to a hospital. Police were continuing to investigate the deadly accident a week later and had not filed criminal charges against the at-fault driver. Officials determined that the person behind the wheel of the car was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the wreck.

This crash highlights the dangers people on foot face when walking beside or crossing streets designed only for cars and trucks. As Virginia personal injury and wrongful death attorneys who regularly represent pedestrians, we know that all roads pose risks. But when there is literally no place for a person out of a vehicle to be, or even feel, safe, tragic events are sure to occur.

We send our condolences to the family members and friends of the woman who lost her life in this accident.
