A four-year-old girl is in critical condition after being struck by a bus in Lynchburg this morning.
According to law enforcement reports, at approximately 11 am this morning, the Lynchburg Police Department and Fire and EMS were dispatched to Greenfield Drive, in the 800 block area, after receiving calls that an accident had occurred involving a city bus and a pedestrian.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they discovered the young child had been hit. Witnesses say the Lynchburg Transit Company bus had been pulling away from a bus stop when the victim was hit by the left front of the bus.
The little girl was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital; however, she was later transferred to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. As of this writing, her condition is listed as critical.
The traffic unit of the Lynchburg Police Department is investigating the accident and report that charges are pending. The police did not say who those charges are pending against.
Our thoughts are with this little girl and her family and we hope for her full recovery.
As dangerous as it can be when a pedestrian is hit by a car, the injuries can be far graver when a pedestrian is hit by a bus just from the sheer size of the vehicle alone. Whether or not the bus driver in this case was at fault for this tragic accident is something the police investigation should be able to determine. The young victim’s family may want to consider contacting an experienced Virginia personal injury attorney to find out what legal recourse they may have against the driver and/or transit company for their child’s injuries.
